Read it & Make it: Blueberries for Sal

Book: Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey

Blueberries For Sal is a classic children’s book about a little girl who is blueberry picking with her mom, while on the other side of Blueberry Hill, Little Bear and his mom are doing the same. Little Bear and Sal have plopped themselves down to munch on some blueberries, not noticing their mom’s were nowhere to be seen!

We read the book together, stopping to ask questions about what the kids thought would happen next. The little ones talked about blueberry picking in the summer.

I set up this activity on our Flisat table prior to reading the book, so it would be ready for us when we were done. It features Blueberry Hill, Sal and her mom as well as Little Bear and his mom. 2 buckets were added to collect the ‘blueberries’ , mini blue pom poms.

We took scenes from the book to reenact, like the moms getting separated from their little ones, as well as picking the blueberries and making the ‘kerplunk’ sound of Sal’s blueberries hitting the bottom of her pail.

Give this classic kids book a read and create your own blueberry picking adventure! Serve up some blueberries with snack or pretend to be bears munching on blueberries!
