Frozen Monogram Sun Catcher

There are a few perks to having 20 below freezing temperatures believe it or not! I can set up activities that I want to freeze outside and not have to take up any room in my freezer! That’s it, that’s the only perk.

For this activity you will need the following:

  • Cake pans
  • Magnet letters
  • Add-ins like flower petals, leaves, sticks, etc
  • Water
  • Pipe Cleaners

Start by setting everything out, except the water. Have your little one place their initial in the cake pan.

Next, have them place the items of their choice around the letter. We used leaves and flower petals for ours. Have them help carry the pan outside and place it on a flat, sturdy surface. We used our deck.

Gently pour the water into the pan. Twist the pipe cleaner at one end, and create a loop at the other. Place the twisted end in the water at the edge of the pan. This will act as your hanger.

*Note: if you want clear sun catchers, boil your water first.

Let sit overnight to freeze. If you’re using a non-stick cake pan, it should lift right out. If your pan is not non-stick, bring your pan inside and place it in a bowl of hot water for about 5 seconds and it should release the ice from the pan.

Hang up your sun catchers and watch the light bounce off the colours!

This was a really fun activity, and the little ones all loved seeing their initial represented on our trees!

You can switch up the cake pans, try a star pan or square! Switch up your add-ins too, try pom poms, coloured water, or feathers!
